What to do to make Kalanchoe bloom longer?
The most vivid and hardy of all the beautifully flowering "bouquets in pots" is a luxurious Kalanchoe. Thanks to the efforts of breeders, the selection of flowering varieties today has become delightfully diverse. Kalanchoe is usually bought as a gift or instead of a bouquet, or for yourself - as an interior decoration. And to do this is not so difficult, after all, after all, Kalanchoe is a succulent!
Kalanchoe is a unique beautifully flowering succulent. And although among the Kalanchoe there are many medicinal species and extravagant decorative foliage, this plant is associated in most, primarily with bright flowers.
Neat low bushes, formed by special pruning and processing by growth inhibitors, seem very neat and amazingly flawless. The plant has fleshy, decorated with a serrated edge, dark green shiny leaves, succulent shoots and shields of inflorescences.
The original flowers of Kalanchoe with four petals in simple varieties (or with dozens of folding in a rose-like flower - the best terry hybrids) offer the most striking acrylic colors - yellow, orange, red, pink and even two-tone. Delicate or catchy, Kalanchoe can be chosen for every taste and interior.
Kalanchoe Blossfeld (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana) and its many hybrids flooded the shelves and are expelled all year round, almost without disappearing from the sale. Flowering Kalanchoe babies purchased as a gift or for themselves often disappoint just a few weeks after purchase. The bush, which in the early days and leaves can not be seen under the mass of flowers, often starts to fade, deform, lose all its luster in the home mode.
Why Kalanchoe Fades Fast
Only two factors can cause a disappointingly fast flowering of Kalanchoe:
- natural aging and the end of the flowering period;
- inattentive care or selection of conditions of detention.
At the flowering stage, Kalanchoe is a genuine "plant of habits." And the less change, the lower the risk of rapid flowering. But the main reason that the lush bushes of Kalanchoe quickly fade, often lies elsewhere - the choice of plants that bloom for a long time or were driven out in violation of the rules.
When buying Kalanchoe, it is worth remembering that the state of the plant - the stage of flowering, the presence of more buds, or, conversely, the dominance of already blossoming flowers - affect how much it can bloom at home. The bushes, which have just begun to bloom, will allow you to enjoy a blooming miracle for several months.
But even in this case, you should not rely on the fact that the flowering of Kalanchoe will last forever. The average flowering period of this crop is 2-3 months. Even the “year-round” calendulas bloom in waves, demanding for such a miracle not only additional illumination, but also impeccable care.
Sooner or later, any Kalanchoe fades, it is a natural process. If the plant is capable, after a short pause, new peduncles will appear. But even if not, after the right period of rest, everything can begin anew.
It is not so difficult to extend the flowering of Kalanchoe, allowing it to go through the full flowering period - just pay attention to the plant and its habits.
Optimal conditions for Kalanchoe
Some species of Kalanchoe can be classified as shade-tolerant plants, but certainly not lush bushes. They also do not like direct sunlight and prefer diffuse lighting, but it should be as bright as possible. Eastern and western window sills or places similar to them in terms of illumination are great for Kalanchoe.
On cloudy days and during winter flowering, backlighting will extend flowering (at least up to 8, ideally up to 10-12 hours). But the limitation of daylight hours, without which, according to myths, Kalanchoe cannot be grown, already flowering bushes are useless. It is used only in order to achieve budding, and not to prolong flowering.
The temperatures of Kalanchoe are much less demanding. It can grow in a wide temperature range from 10 to more than 25 degrees Celsius, but during flowering, stable warmth in summer (+ 21 ... + 23 ° C) and light coolness in autumn and winter (+ 16 ... + 18 ° C) is the best option.
Strong temperature changes can lead to accelerated flowering. And drafts, which Kalanchoe is not afraid of at another time, during flowering are undesirable. Unlike airing, which allows you to extend flowering. And one more secret - blooming Kalanchoe is undesirable to rearrange and rotate.
Kalanchoe care at home
Even the relentlessly flowering varieties of Kalanchoe Blossfeld still remain succulents. And so it is worth treating them, always remembering a dislike for excess watering and top dressing.
Kalanchoe is just what you need that careful and not too excessive care:
- accurate, but regular watering with drying of the upper layer of the substrate, without stagnation of water in pallets and soaking greens and buds;
- top dressing only at the stage of active growth and flowering with special fertilizers for succulents during the growth period and fertilizers for flowering plants during budding and flowering, rare and not concentrated (enough once every 3-4 weeks with a twice reduced dose).
If possible, care is best done as it was done in a flower shop.
Kalanchoe should always be kept clean: the leaves of the plant are dusted gently with a damp sponge or cloth.
Luxurious flowering bushes in the right conditions and with careful care tirelessly open the buds and delight for many weeks. But if you leave fading inflorescences on Kalanchoe, the flowering period will be reduced several times. Regular “sanitary cleaning” - cutting old peduncles to the base, and if the variety allows it, then regular plucking of fading flowers - will allow Kalanchoe to bloom relentlessly. It is worth regularly removing damaged, dry, yellowing leaves (most often from the bottom of the bush).
Do I need a Kalanchoe transplant after purchase?
Blooming Kalanchoe quickly degenerate and grow very slowly. For lush flowering, plants are easier to regularly renew from cuttings, rather than preserve old bushes. In this case, a transplant is not needed at all.
But even if you lovingly shape and preserve Kalanchoe from year to year and let them reveal their full beauty, then it’s not worth replanting bushes every year without need. Kalanchoe is transferred to a new container only when they fill the previous one.
Including do not rush to transplant after purchase, unless you need an emergency procedure due to problems with the substrate or condition of the plant. Especially if the bush blooms lushly. Change of habitat and so enough stress. Do not aggravate it also by changing the capacity. Let Kalanchoe develop normally and master the substrate, and only then transfer it.
The transplant itself has few rules. The fewer contacts with the roots, the better. Light soil for succulents, a high layer of drainage, small pots in accordance with the type of roots - that’s all that Kalanchoe is for comfort.
How to achieve re-flowering Kalanchoe
After the plant fades, Kalanchoe should be cut off, leaving short stumps or the desired length from the shoots for formation. For 4-8 weeks, the plant is placed in shade and, if possible, cool (about 15 degrees), with very rare and scarce watering.
As soon as the plant starts growing, it is returned to heat and to the brightest light possible, pinching twigs (the standard is over 4-5 pairs of leaves) to form dense bushes. For the formation of buds, you need to limit daylight hours to 8-10 hours, artificially shading Kalanchoe for 4-6 days.
Terry varieties of Kalanchoe are often immediately recommended to renew, propagating by cuttings. To do this, cut off from the uterine bushes young shoots about 10 cm long and root them in an ordinary light sandy substrate.
